A plated seafood course beside a glass of white wine on a candlelit table

West Loop, Chicago. Wednesday to Sunday from 5:30 pm

Dinner in the half light

Nine courses, thirty-two seats and very little electric light. Chef Livia Marchetti cooks the Great Lakes and the farms around them with the patience of her grandmother’s kitchen in Friuli.

The chef in a white jacket stands in a dark kitchen holding a finished plate Hands placing herbs on a plated dish with tweezers

A kitchen that cooks by candle and by season

Ombra means shade in Italian. We keep the dining room dark so the plates, and the people across the table, catch all the light there is.

The menu changes four times a year and a little every week. Whitefish from Lake Superior, squash from a farm in Kankakee, wild mushrooms that arrive on Thursday morning with the dirt still on them.
